  • Hello From Shantanu Karve - IT for years and years

Visiting friends and seeing their autistic son jolted me and made me think more about medical issues than I have before. I'm a IT person.

Separately,I take an interest in financial stuff and one of the fund managers I respect ( one of perhaps 10 ! ) - John Hussman, funds autistic research, also takes part in ( as the team statistician ) and wrote up a paper on a GWAS study of autism. He posted it on his funds website recently and I actually read it all the way through and found it interesting.

Which is a long way round to saying that's why I've got interested in NGS. I'll always be coming at it from the cloud computing perspective - I've already got as far as setting up a MapReduce, Hadoop, Mahout ( framework for machine intelligence ) cluster.

Now I've just go to figure out which of the various areas of NGS I want to go for!

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
