Bioinformatics Scientist - Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine

Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine is seeking a motivated bioinformatician (Research Assistant Professor track) to join the newly established Center for Biomedical Informatics. This is a multifaceted position with responsibilities in infrastructure development, genomic research, application development and support, hardware and software administration, and database/system management.

The Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM) has a strong need of multi-tiered bioinformatics support for a wide range of biomedical research projects and clinical operations. The bioinformatician is expected to: 1) conduct genomics research; 2) develop and/or implement institutional infrastructure in biomedical informatics, especially bioinformatics; 3) identify and apply statistical, informatics, and computational methodologies for genomic analysis of clinical and research projects; 4) manage related genomic data, clinical records, and laboratory information; 5) assure efficient and effective center operations, availability of required resources, and proper prioritization of projects; and 6) coordinate with internal groups within SSOM, such as Information Systems and other clinical and research laboratories.

The bioinformatician will be appointed as a Research Assistant Professor. He/she will be expected to be involved over time in preparing grant applications as PI, Co-PI, multiple-PI or co-investigator. He/she should have advanced mathematical and computer skills combined with in-depth knowledge of biological science. The ideal candidate should have analytical expertise in one or more types of genomic data, including but not limited to next-generation sequencing, expression microarray, genotyping, and arrayCGH. Strong personal skills and the ability to work independently and yet function as part of the team are essential.

    Requirements:

    - PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, or related fields
    - Excellent organization and communication skills
    - At least 5 years research experience in the field of bioinformatics and genomics
    - Strong programming skills in R and/or SAS, C/C++, Perl, SQL, PHP, Java, and HTML
    - Strong UNIX/LINUX system expertise
    - Strong data management experience and expertise

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    - Biomedical research background preferred
    - Strong genomic data analysis expertise, next-generation sequencing experience preferred
    - Project management experience desired
    - Familiarity with bioinformatics resources and software strongly preferred
    - Ability to work independently and take initiative when necessary
    - Be accountable and meet deadlines

Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine is a national role model in reinventing medical education to prepare students for today’s health-care environment. 16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
