Postdoc at Oxford (15 months) - Retroviruses and Cancer

Research Associate – bioinformatics of retroviruses and cancer (15 months)

University of Oxford - Department of Zoology

    Salary Range: £29,099 to £33,734 (Grade 7)

As part of our Wellcome Trust Project Grant investigating endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) (PIs Robert Belshaw and Mike Tristem) we want to take advantage of the growing next generation genome projects and investigate the upregulation and mobility of ERVs with respect to the development of human disease.

Here in the Zoology Department at Oxford our postdoc is leaving to take up a Research Fellowship and we are planning a new line of research into ERVs and cancer (we have another postdoc working at Imperial College London on the 1000 Genomes project data). The position is available immediately but we can be flexible about the start date. It is for 15 months (or slightly longer if the appointee is a new Ph.D.). The aim of this post is to develop methods to efficiently explore next-generation sequencing datasets with respect to ERVs. You can see our group at http://evolve.zoo.ox.ac.uk/evolve/Welcome.html.

For further details do not hesitate to email me at [email protected]. To apply, please send your c.v. with covering letter and contact details for two referees. My apologies in advance if I do not reply to you personally.

    Closing date: 27th March 2012

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
