  • Bioinformatics postdoc: Plant genomics (Barcelona, Spain)

The Department Prof. Lehrach, Group Dr. H. Himmelbauer invites applications for the following open position (funding until September 30th 2014):

    Postdoc Bioinformatics / Computational Biology
(E 13 according to the German salary scale)

We offer a challenging job at the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, Spain (group page http://seq.crg.es/main/bin/view/Home/WebHome). The CRG is located at the seafront close to the Olympic harbor and combines excellent science with an inspiring environment in the heart of Barcelona with its cultural attractions, beach and metropolitan flair. The contract will be at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin/Germany. The successful candidate will pursue projects related to interpreting second and third generation sequencing data and will implement software to assemble high-fidelity genome sequences from heterozygous genotypes based on Illumina, PacBio, and Nanopore sequence data. The assembled genomes will be compared to the sugar beet reference sequence and related genomes to extract and interpret biologically relevant differences.

    Requirements:
Ph.D. in Bioinformatics or related field, solid programming background (ideally experience with developing sequence analysis tools), experience with handling (large) sequence data sets, knowledge of molecular genetics and understanding of lab methods, knowledge of genome sequencing concepts. Experience with analysis of 2nd generation sequencing data (454, Illumina) is a plus.

The group has successfully performed several projects using 454- and Illumina technology. We recently completed a reference sequence for the sugar beet genome (http://bvseq.molgen.mpg.de). We are a multidisciplinary team and offer work in a lively and friendly atmosphere, and state-of-the art computing infrastructure. We are looking forward to expanding our team by a dedicated and strongly motivated person with distinct interest in the challenges of modern sequencing technologies.

The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Applications including a summary of Master's and PhD theses, publication list, and three references should be sent by May 14th, 2012 only via e-mail to:

Recent Advances in Sequencing Analysis Tools
    by seqadmin

The sequencing world is rapidly changing due to declining costs, enhanced accuracies, and the advent of newer, cutting-edge instruments. Equally important to these developments are improvements in sequencing analysis, a process that converts vast amounts of raw data into a comprehensible and meaningful form. This complex task requires expertise and the right analysis tools. In this article, we highlight the progress and innovation in sequencing analysis by reviewing several of the...

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
