Bioinformaticist Position at Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences

    Auto req ID: 27074BR

School/Unit: Faculty of Arts and Sciences

    Department: Division of Science/Informatics Group

    Duties & Responsibilities:

This position will work closely with our scientists and investigators to enable researchers to analyze and visualize large complex biological data sets that are generated both in the Division's core sequencing facility and faculty labs. The position reports to the Director of Informatics and Scientific Applications and will be involved with bioinformatics development and support including sequence database management, pipeline development, automation and streamlining of existing procedures and the development of tools to help solve computational problems.

The Informatics and Scientific Applications group plans to develop analysis pipelines to support biology researchers who have yet to gain in depth bioinformatics knowledge. In tandem the group aims to provide instructional materials to enable researchers to increase their expertise in bioinformatics techniques in a high-throughput environment.

The group lies at the intersection of scientific research and large scale computational analysis. Accordingly, we are looking for a talented individual to provide expertise both in scientific analytical techniques and computational systems.

    Basic Qualifications:

Degree in Biology/Computer Science or other scientific field and at least 5 years bioinformatics experience with an emphasis on genomics. Experience with both high programming languages such as perl/python and lower level ones such as C/C++. Experience with scientific computing algorithms and statistical techniques.

    Additional Qualifications:

Experience with large, computationally intensive problems. Expertise with combining a number of algorithms in pipelines with requisite source control management, implementation, and bug fixing. Close attention to detail, good communication skills with initiative, self-guidance and the ability to perform in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with a lot of technical challenges.

Knowledge of next generation sequence technology and analysis and with high level programming techniques (java/c/ruby/python/perl). Experience with Linux and in depth software development. Experience with Matlab, R and data visualization techniques. Experience managing data at scale through relational database technologies.

Must have strong communication skills and the ability to interact well with others.

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
