Exome sequencing in neurodegeneration post-doc - UCL London

    UCL Institute of Neurology (2012 - 2015)
Exome Sequencing in Neurodegenerative Disorders – Academic Post-doc

Applications are invited for a Research Associate within the Department of Molecular Neuroscience under the supervision of Professor Henry Houlden ([email protected]) and Professor John Hardy ([email protected]) for the study entitled “Exome Sequencing in Neurodegenerative Disorders”.

The post holder will be responsible for the tracking, processing, analysis and storage of exome sequencing-based data produced from the neurogenetics laboratories HiSeq and MiSeq sequencers. He/she will also contribute to the development of meta-analysis pipelines and the exome sequencing projects based on large patient cohorts with ataxia, MSA and neuromuscular disorders. They will be expected to write high impact publications developed from these patient and neuropathology series and they will benefit from the support of a technician in the development and analysis of exome data.

Applicants should have a PhD in biology or computer science and prior experience with the research and analysis of exome genomics data. Experience in the identification of genetic variants associated with disease and the downstream analysis of this data is essential.

The post is available from August 2012 and is funded to January 2015 by an MRC grant. It will be offered subject to satisfactory references, health clearance by the Occupational Health Department and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of nine months.

Starting salary on UCL Grade 7 in the range £31,778 - £35,826 per annum including London Allowance.

You should apply for this post through UCL's online recruitment – www.ucl.ac.uk/hr/jobs where you can download a job description and person specification.
For queries relating to the application process please contact Henry Houlden ([email protected]) or Samantha Robinson, Personnel Officer, Institute of Neurology, 23 Queen Square, London, WC1N 3BG (email: [email protected]).
    Closing Date: 16th August 2012

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
