Postdoctoral Position in Next-Generation Population Genetics

We seek to hire a post-doctoral research associate for a project funded by the NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity program to explore patterns of population genetic structure and gene flow within and among wild plant populations in Wisconsin. The project is expected to exploit next-generation sequencing techniques (e.g., RAD-Seq or GBS) to characterize population structure.

Term: The position could begin as early as February or March 2013, or as late as June 2013. Support is for a minimum of one to two years, dependent on performance.

Location: This position is based in the Department of Botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. UW-Madison is a top-ranked research university with state-of-the art facilities and a full-service sequencing center (http://www.biotech.wisc.edu/home). Madison is medium-sized city that ranks consistently among the most livable in the U.S.

Project: We seek an individual who combines exceptional technical talent with an interest and enthusiasm for working as part of team to understand forces underlying local plant extinctions and invasions (http://www.botany.wisc.edu/dob/). The individual hired will work closely with Prof. Thomas Givnish and a research specialist already in place to quantify levels of genetic variation and geographic scales of gene flow (and thus, of overall mobility) in 30-40 plant species. These will be chosen carefully to represent a range of dispersal modes and recent histories of population and range increase or collapse. The research specialist and post-doc will take primary responsibility for collecting plant material in a spatially stratified manner, extracting DNA, analyzing RAD-Seq or GBS variation in DNA sequences, and analyzing the resulting patterns of genetic variation and gene flow. Experience with current- and next-generation sequencing, scripting, bioinformatics, and data analysis and/or population and conservation genetics is required. Facility in writing is especially important. The post-doc will benefit by working as a member of the Dimensions of Biodiversity team with opportunities for creative collaboration, authorship, and an explicit post-doctoral training program.

To apply, please email your contact information (including email), current curriculum vitae, names and email addresses of three referees, and a brief statement of interest to:

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
