  • Penn States seeks experienced systems engineer to build new biomedical computation in

The new initiative in Biomedical Computation at Penn State is seeking a highly experienced computational scientist to design, build, and maintain brand new infrastructure for supporting biomedical research at PSU. This new effort builds upon existing world class projects at PSU including Galaxy (http://www.galaxyproject.org) and BioStar (http://www.biostars.org) and will actively involve renowned biomedical researchers within centers for Comparative, Medical, and Systems Genomics. The goal of project is to successfully implement the first of its kind, scalable, and sustainable platform for data-driven biology that will set the standard nationwide. The successful candidate will be actively involved in all aspects of the effort including interfacing with the international scientific community and attending national and international meetings and workshops.

This position comes with highly competitive compensation package and hardware acquisition funds and does not depend on grant funding.

Successful candidates should possess at least extensive experience in architecting and maintaining complex distributed heterogeneous UNIX-based computational environments. Experience with Solaris and derivatives, Debian/Ubuntu, FreeBSD and a commercial network operating system (such as ExtremeXOS) are critical. The candidate should be comfortable working with distributed computing technologies such as BIND, Kerberos, LDAP, Postfix, Dovecot, configuration management tools, and a plethora of network filesystems such as AFS, NFS, GPFS, and Lustre.

In addition, the candidate should demonstrate an advanced knowledge of the ZFS filesystem and of high-availability clustering solutions for PostgreSQL. Experience with object storage systems, petabyte-scale data management, cloud computing infrastructures (especially Amazon Web Services), and national and international data and research networks such as XSEDE, Internet2, and National LambdaRail is highly desirable. The candidate should possess a knowledge of distributed resource managers such as Torque, SGE and derivatives, Condor, and LSF. Programming proficiency is also a requirement, especially systems programming with a focus on performance, portability and security, in Python, C, C++, Bourne, and web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript. Typically requires ten years of work related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Targeted Sequencing: Choosing Between Hybridization Capture and Amplicon Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Targeted sequencing is an effective way to sequence and analyze specific genomic regions of interest. This method enables researchers to focus their efforts on their desired targets, as opposed to other methods like whole genome sequencing that involve the sequencing of total DNA. Utilizing targeted sequencing is an attractive option for many researchers because it is often faster, more cost-effective, and only generates applicable data. While there are many approaches...
