Technical Assistant I/II - Whitehead Institute

Technical Assistant I / II – Genome Technology Core

Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research is a leading, nonprofit research and educational institution that has defined the cutting edge of biomedical science, creating a legacy of research excellence and academic eminence since 1982. Wholly independent in its governance, finances and research programs, Whitehead shares a teaching affiliation with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), offering the intellectual, collegial and scientific benefits of a leading research university. Whitehead's Faculty Members and Fellows run pioneering programs in cancer research, immunology, developmental biology, stem cell research, regenerative medicine, genetics and genomics--programs with a record of success.

Director David C. Page likens the Institute to an artists' colony. "What we do here at Whitehead is to attract the best possible intellectual capital and empower maximally creative--really wildly creative--individuals to realize their dreams within these walls". Whitehead offers a generous comprehensive benefits package which includes health and dental plans, retirement program, paid time off, reimbursement accounts (FSAs), short and long term disability and much more.

    OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
Provide support to our Next-Generation Sequencing workflow and perform bench-level experiments to assist with projects aimed at managing a production or research team’s technical processes in order to ensure the output of high quality genomic data in a high throughput facility. The specific focus of each experiment and the type of techniques employed may vary in accordance with shifts in team goals in a fast paced and dynamic environment.

    CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
    • RNA/DNA sample processing and data acquisition for gene expression, genotyping and sequencing analysis.
    • Operating equipment for microarray analysis and “Next-Gen” DNA sequencers.
    • Applying bench-level molecular biology techniques to optimize existing protocols and implement new protocols as they become available.
    • Provide high-quality and professional support to cutting edge scientific research.
    • Communicates effectively with all levels of staff to ensure that work supports current objectives.
    • Other tasks, as required

    QUALIFICATIONS
    • BS or MS in Molecular Biology, or related field.
    • Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and principles of molecular biology.
    • Experience handling DNA and RNA in a lab setting, preferably in an independent project.
    • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and the desire to work in a service-oriented environment.
    • Strong written, communication and organizational skills required.
    • Experience with qPCR, Microarrays and Sequencing a plus.
    • Experience with genomic technology platforms like Illumina, Affymetrix and Agilent a plus.

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
