PhD position ‘Genomics of plant carnivory’
The research groups of ‘Plant Molecular Biology & Biophysics’ and ‘Evolutionary Computational Biology’ and are looking for a highly motivated PhD student. Our project aims on understanding the molecular basis for and the evolution of plant carnivory. We use a multidisciplinary approach based on state-of-art bioinformatics, molecular biology, chemistry and biophysics.
As part of the team, the successful candidate will analyze and compare the genomes of different carnivorous plants. Therefore, he/she has to work with second- and third-generation sequencing data. He/She will perform genome assemblies, annotations and genome comparisons. Close collaboration with the experimentally working groups is expected. The project is performed in collaboration with members of the Max-Planck-Institute for Developmental Biology, Tübingen. The initial appointment is for three years and available immediately. An external project stay at collaborating labs would be feasible for up to 6 months during the appointment.
Successful candidates will have experience in genome analyses including short read analysis and genome annotation. Proven skills in scripting languages (Perl / Phython) and Linux/Unix computing environment are a must. Good understanding of molecular biology, experience with assemblies and familiarity with biostatistics including knowledge of “R” present a plus.

Prof. Jörg Schultz, Mail, Website
We need the following documents sent as pdf for a successful application:
- Statement of interest
- Two reference letters
- CV including a description of your practical (programming) experience
Furthermore, you should be prepared to answer the following questions:
- Why do you find the area of (comparative) genomics/transcriptomics exciting?
- How would you complement expertise that we already have?
- What makes you a particularly strong candidate?
- Why is our department a good fit for you?
