  • Bioinformatician - The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) Flagstaff, AZ

The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a Phoenix, Arizona-based non-profit organization dedicated to conducting groundbreaking research with life changing results. TGen is focused on helping patients with cancer, neurological disorders and diabetes, through cutting edge translational research (the process of rapidly moving research towards patient benefit). TGen physicians and scientists work to unravel the genetic components of both common and rare complex diseases in adults and children. Working with collaborators in the scientific and medical communities literally worldwide, TGen makes a substantial contribution to help our patients through efficiency and effectiveness of the translational process. For more information, visit: www.tgen.org.

    Position Description:
TGen’s Division of Pathogen Genomics is looking for a Bioinformaticist to join a team of researchers leading cutting-edge scientific exploration. The successful applicant will work closely with biologists and other bioinformaticians to develop and apply microbial genetic bioinformatics tools, identify relevant data sources, improve existing software, develop new data analysis methods and manage complex databases. This position will involve working on multiple projects analyzing large biomedical and molecular genetic data sets. The emphasis in our laboratory is on Next Generation DNA and RNA sequence data, associated with microbial pathogens, with the goal of increasing knowledge about important and emerging pathogens, ultimately affecting positive change in public health understanding, improved diagnostic capabilities and clinical outcomes.

    Essential Job Functions
-Implementation, application, maintenance and customization of existing informatics resources, such as scientific software and databases, in multiple programming languages; developing Graphical User Interfaces for analysis tools, visualization and compilation of results, facilitating generally defined routine data processing, migration, organization, management tasks; building project specific workflows involving implementing automated analysis steps.

-Development of novel professional quality bioinformatics analysis software for biomedical and molecular genetic data processing, using appropriate programming languages, databases, computational methods and algorithms, capable of processing large heterogeneous biomedical and molecular genetic data sets from multiple sources; developed software will be reusable, modular, tested, version-controlled, documented and shared repository oriented.

-Design and evaluation of innovative computational algorithms, including the use of appropriate statistical methods, for bioinformatics data analysis, interpretation and knowledge mining of data.

-Staying abreast of current pertinent scientific literature, investigating new biomedical data processing methods, trends, technologies, and paradigms relevant to bioinformatics; assisting with research planning, interpretation of scientific findings, manuscripts, grants and research proposals; presenting at internal and external scientific meetings and conferences.

-Interacting with other bioinformatics personnel and effectively communicating with other researchers to understand their data analysis requirements; work with IT and High-Performance Computing departments towards understanding the computing infrastructure and using it effectively to provide support to various researchers.

    Required Education and Work Experience
This position requires at least a Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics/Computer Science/Computational Biology/Molecular Biology or related field experience and a BS in Biology sciences or appropriate level of experience. Ideal candidate will have a BS or MS in Biological sciences.

Desired experience and qualifications (in order of importance)
Experience in software engineering, including: requirements gathering, design and documentation, test-driven development/unit testing, source code management, and quality assurance.

Demonstrated excellent communication skills and drive to interact effectively with researchers carrying out cutting-edge biomedical and microbial pathogen research.

Experience in academic and/or industrial applied research environment in bioinformatic data analysis, specifically with Next Generation DNA and RNA sequence analysis, with an in-depth understanding of these data types.

Experience in software development in multiple programming languages, such as Perl, Python, Java, C++, and their derivatives, and the ability to learn new languages as needed.

    C++ experience is highly desired.

Experience implementing computational algorithms, statistical analysis methods, custom data analysis software and database resources for custom analysis and building workflows.

Experience with Linux, UNIX, and Mac OS X based systems.

Experience developing Graphical User Interface systems as well as shell scripts and command-line interfaces.

Experience with scientific computing and data visualization tools, such as MATLAB, R, etc., and understanding of basic and advanced statistics.

Familiarity with large-scale data analysis and utilization of high-performance computing systems and parallel programming, such as Hadoop/MapReduce, Big Data, and Cloud Computing.

Experience with relational database design, development, and SQL programming.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...
