  • Bioinformatician job opportunity at Cardiff University

A highly motivated and enthusiastic full-time bioinformatician is sought to handle and analyse Next Generation Sequence (NGS) data to support biomedical research in Wales.

You will join an established team of bioinformaticians and laboratory staff within the Genomics Facility of Wales Gene Park. Established 2002, and based in Cardiff University’s School of Medicine, Wales Gene Park supports genomics research throughout Wales. Through our close collaboration with the NHS All Wales Genetic Laboratory, we use HiSeq, MiSeq, and Ion Torrent technologies to generate genomic data to support a diversity of biomedical research in human cancers and medical genetics.

Alongside our existing team and working closely with ARCCA, the University’s Advanced Research Computing Facility, you will handle, manipulate and analyse NGS data generated by us and external providers. You will provide specialist advice and experimental design expertise to colleagues looking to exploit exome-seq, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and whole genome re-sequencing amongst other standard workflows as well as help develop novel NGS workflows. You will also contribute to our various training programmes.

You will have a postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience. You will be working closely with an established team of bioinformaticians so previous experience of handling Next Generation Sequencing data, whilst desirable, is not essential.

What is essential is that you have proven experience in writing software code in Perl, Python, Java, C/C++, or similar computer language, have good communication skills, are self motivated, and are willing and able to work accurately to a deadline. You will be expected to work within a Unix command line environment utilising standard pre-existing bioinformatics packages and pipelines as well as your own bespoke software solutions. A background in biological sciences, whilst highly desirable, is not essential.

Informal enquires should be addressed to Dr Kevin Ashelford ([email protected]).

This is a full-time position (35 hours per week) and fixed-term until 31st March 2018.
    Salary £31,342 - £37,394 per annum (Grade 6)

Advanced Tools Transforming the Field of Cytogenomics
    by seqadmin

At the intersection of cytogenetics and genomics lies the exciting field of cytogenomics. It focuses on studying chromosomes at a molecular scale, involving techniques that analyze either the whole genome or particular DNA sequences to examine variations in structure and behavior at the chromosomal or subchromosomal level. By integrating cytogenetic techniques with genomic analysis, researchers can effectively investigate chromosomal abnormalities related to diseases, particularly...

How RNA-Seq is Transforming Cancer Studies
    by seqadmin

Cancer research has been transformed through numerous molecular techniques, with RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) playing a crucial role in understanding the complexity of the disease. Maša Ivin, Ph.D., Scientific Writer at Lexogen, and Yvonne Goepel Ph.D., Product Manager at Lexogen, remarked that “The high-throughput nature of RNA-seq allows for rapid profiling and deep exploration of the transcriptome.” They emphasized its indispensable role in cancer research, aiding in biomarker...
