  • Bioinfor postdoc in Genome Architecture during development

    Full-time Research Associate Bioinformatician position.

    Job Location
    UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON, UK
    Research Dept of Cancer Biology
    Genome Organization and Function Group

    Project Background
The Genome Organization and Function Group headed by Dr. Suzana Hadjur is seeking a Bioinformatician to start immediately. Using experimental and computational approaches, the group has a broad interest in genome organization and its influence on gene regulation. The appointee will be supervised by Dr. Hadjur and will be integrated into both the bioinformatics environment at UCL and into the European FP7 EpiGeneSys community, to which the group has membership.

We use molecular methods (Hi-C, 4C-Seq, ChIP and 3D microscopy) and computational analysis to investigate the organisation of mammalian chromosomes. Recent work has shown that the chromatin proteins, cohesin and CTCF are functionally important for the looping of regulatory elements at individual genes (Hadjur S et al., Nature 2009; Parelho V & Hadjur S et al., Cell 2008) as well as for global chromosome structure (Sofueva S et al. EMBO J 2013 & Vietri Rudan M et al. Cell Reports 2015).

The post-holder will be expected to analyse, integrate and interpret multiple datasets simultaneously (including ChIP-Seq and HiC/4C-Seq); will maintain server storage and manage datasets on the server and will develop appropriate post-analysis strategies and pipelines.

The full-time bioinformatics position is immediately available and funded by the Wellcome Trust for two years in the first instance.

    Requirements
The ideal candidate for this position should have a PhD in a relevant area (Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or Genomics are preferred) and will have significant experience in applied bioinformatics, specifically having worked with next generation sequencing datasets. The applicant must have excellent analytical skills, be proficient with R, a strong statistical background, be familiar with working in a Linux environment, ability to work independently and as part of a team, very good oral/written communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to develop integrated databases of biological data.

    How to Apply
Please contact Dr. Hadjur directly [email protected] or submit your application online at

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist on Modified Bases...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
