New Bioinformaticians Wanted In Experienced Team!

The Department of Translational Genomics and newly created Institute of Translational Genomics at The University of Southern California (USC) welcome the next generation of new clinically driven scientists who share our drive for bringing novel technologies and molecular insights to help improve patient outcome. The Department of Translational Genomics and Institute of Translational Genomics at Keck Medicine of USC is focused on translating the molecular study of genes into individual treatment plans.USC founded in 1880, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the “Trojan Family,” which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.

We will be having openings in education, research, and administration, and continually are in search of those committed to moving the tremendous research conducted at USC and the Keck School of the medicine to the bedside improving the outcomes for its patients.

    BIOINFORMATICIAN
    Posted 11/15/17

The Institute of Translational Genomics is seeking to hire a bioinformatician or “informatics specialist for bioinformatics” to work with members of the Institute of Translational Genomics in the development of pipelines a new Next-Generation Sequencing Center to service the Keck School of Medicine, the University of Southern California (USC), and its affiliates. This masters or bachelors level individual will work other bioinformaticians and the Sequencing Center leadership to develop pipelines in support of sequencing data analysis, management, related resources resources. This person will report under Dr. David Craig within the Keck School of Medicine.

Requires a bachelors or masters in biological sciences, bioinformatics, computer science, engineering or mathematics, or a related field or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. The ideal candidate will have experience recent experience with providing user support in a core/academic setting. Preference will be given to those candidates who have experience in clinical genomics and biomarker discovery utilizing next-generation sequencing data. The knowledge of working within a Linux-based environment, least one scripting language (Javascript, Python, or Ruby) and of at least one environment for high-dimensional data analysis (SAS, R/Bioconductor, or Matlab) is required.

    The ideal candidate will have:

    - Applicants with background in molecular biology, genetics or similar field, strong laboratory experience and bioinformatics expertise are encouraged to apply.

    - An in-depth and practical knowledge of bio-statistics and the ability to work with a variety of different biological data types.

    - Have previously worked with NGS data, including RNA-seq and ChIP-seq.

    - Experience working within a Linux-based environment and working with high-performance computing and cloud-based analysis platforms.

    - Strong computer skills on the analysis of genomic data using bioinformatics, in addition to working knowledge of sequencing technologies is required.

    - Proficiency in Python, postgreSQL and R. Programming experience with two scripting languages, either Python, Perl or Ruby, and standard algorithms - data structures.

    - Experience working with genomics or epigenomics data from patient samples, mouse models or cancer cell lines.

    - Familiarity with relational database systems and writing SQL queries for data management/storage retrieval.

Minimum Education: Master's degree, Combined work experience and education as equivalent
    Minimum Experience: 1 year

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
