    early-career bioinformatician opportunity at NIH

The Cancer Immunobiology Section at the National Cancer Institute is looking for a talented early-career bioinformatician to join a team of scientists in Bethesda, MD doing groundbreaking work connecting the dots between intestinal microbiomes and cancer therapy response. Come participate in the microbiome revolution with us and help save lives at the same time! Information about our research program is available here.

This is a federal government position with the NIH post-baccalaureate program, intended for U.S. citizens or permanent residents who meet one of the following three criteria:
    1. college graduates who received their bachelor's degrees less than THREE years prior to the date they begin the program,
    2. individuals who are more than 3 years past the receipt of their bachelor's degree but received a master's degree less than SIX MONTHS before they begin the program, OR
    3. students who have been accepted into graduate, other doctoral, or medical school programs and who have written permission from their school to delay entrance for up to one year to pursue a biomedical research project at the NIH.
The NIH post-baccalaureate program provides a generous stipend and excellent health insurance, along with a wealth of training and educational opportunities for applying to graduate and medical school.

    Required criteria
    1. Familiar with UNIX/Linux operating system and command-line environment. Knowledge of shell scripting is an additional plus.
    2. Programming experience in at least one of the following: Python/Perl/R/Java

    Optional criteria
    3. Trained in analysis of next-generation DNA sequencing data and association file formats (SAM/BAM/FASTQ).
    4. Previous experience with microbiome data analysis (16S amplicon or shotgun DNA sequencing) using Mothur/Qiime/DADA2 or similar

Any candidates who match even just #1 and #2 above are strongly encouraged to reach out to us. We’re happy to train in #3 and #4.

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
