  • Staff Software Engineer

Pacific Biosciences is looking for a generalist software engineer to develop control software for existing and future DNA sequencers. The position will require utilization of a diverse set of technologies to control robot and device movement, detect and report environment changes, detect failures, identify recovery options, develop diagnostics and communicate status and state to the user interface and logs.

    Responsibilities

Design and develop services and diagnostics for hardware devices in our instruments, by interfacing with motion control processors, custom FPGA firmware, and third-party devices over serial.
Analyze complex software systems and collaborate with others to improve the overall design.
Maintain good automated test coverage with a mix of unit, functional, and integration tests.
Debug occasional issues within the mono project, bisect changes, and develop patches as needed.
Will work closely with both hardware and electrical teams on designs and troubleshooting related to device and firmware performance.

    Qualifications
Bachelors and/or Masters in Computer Science, Engineering or other related discipline with 6+ years of work experience.
Experience in hardware device control and communication, including control loops.
Excellent coding skills and fluency in managed environments like C#, Java, or Python.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to be able to effectively interface with mechanical, electronic, quality, and manufacturing engineers.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, a strong team player, able to take initiative, detail-oriented, and able to work effectively as part of a team. Thrives in a fast-paced environment, interacting with engineers and scientists from a variety of disciplines.

    Preferred Qualifications

Comfortable developing, testing and debugging on both Windows/.Net and Linux/Mono.
Experience debugging applications on Linux via gdb or similar.
Experience with image analysis and machine vision.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, sex, color, religion, national origin, protected veteran status, or on the basis of disability, gender identity, and sexual orientation.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
