Now, no. Maybe in the coming months. We'll see. My experience this decade is that it doesn't pay to underestimate ABI's ability to fumble a good thing, whereas Illumina rarely falters. Well, that was the case. With Roche in control, that could change. If the market had better instincts then ABI's stock prices should have risen on information that Illumina might be acquired by Roche.

I mean, is there no accounting for how badly, how disgracefully Roche blew it with the 454? So now the big stumbling giant wants another swat at Illumina?

Ah yes, there was to be a commercial release by the end of the year. Hmm, I did not notice one. Maybe they were taking a play out of the Perl6 playbook and meant "the end of some year"?

Are you kidding me? Over the past 5 years Illumina has crushed ABI and Roche with their initial offerings in this market. Not even close.

    Just this year:
Illumina launched their 250 base chemistry on the MiSeq and 150 base chemistry on the HiSeq -- both requiring only a couple of days to complete a run. Meanwhile they are also mopping the floor with pretty much any other company with respect to library prep kits.

Illumina has one remaining competitor -- that is Proton/Ion Torrent (which, yeah ABI did acquire), but it is unclear whether even these guys will be able to overtake them.

I am not looking forward to Roche imposing its moribund worldview on Illumina. I hope the sale doesn't happen.

But even if it does, it seems to take Roche several years to completely ruin a company. By that time the 4th gen instruments will likely have risen to preeminence anyway.

Hey kids! Who's trading up nearly 8% today?
If you guessed illumina, you're right!
If you also guessed it's because Roche is finally buying them, you may also be right!

    Google Finance

    Nasdaq article

A little birdy told me Roche's maybe offering 66 a share...........

and having rejected Roche's $51 bid..Goldman Sachs (who were advising Illumina and were rumoured to have a conflict of interest by having a short position in the stock....this is subject to a class lawsuit by Illumina shareholders) then issued a $48 12 month price target... now the stock is $43. The word "muppets" comes to mind

Roche let its offer expire after losing big at the Illumina shareholder meeting. They obtained no board seats and the vote was an overall victory for Illumina's bid to stay independent.

Roche claims there are other options if the illumina bid fails, article at genomenweb:

    http://www.genomeweb.com/sequencing/...ina-deal-fails

    chairman says:

"Illumina is not the only gene sequencing company, and there are other companies making quantum leaps in this field"

    Wonder who that could be????

I can't wait for Roche to drive it into the ground like the did 454. The 454 customer service from what I've seen and heard is just terrible now. Oh, corporate America...

Junior had double digit growth in the last quarter in that very segment. Seeing Ion Torrent outside the politics of Lufe Technologies would be a very naive thing. LT needs to milk it about as much as Roche needs to milk ILMN. Seeing LT's record in diag, you it will be challenging.

Right now, in terms of diagnostic lab penetration (i.e. where the market is going), there are just two teams, or three if you include Roche Junior. But isn't he soon to be abandoned, poor Junior? Diagnostic labs might be better off outsourcing, at least until the dust settles.

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
