Statistics of intensities of overlapping clusters

I'm new to the forum and also new to the gene sequencing field. Someone may have already addressed this. But I was wondering if there was any statistically sound way of detecting the intensities of overlapping clusters in the image files produced by the Illumina Genome Analyzer II.
