  • Why is the PacBIO RSII so big?

It weighs a ton and takes up half a room. Why? Any engineers here that knows what's going on inside?

among other things, laser & optics, filter, cooling for the reagents and the entire interior, a liquid handling robot, an overengineered air table that runs on nitrogen - which was not really needed.

"..an overengineered air table that runs on nitrogen - which was not really needed" please elaborate

I look at the RSII and a ONT minion and they (skipping some details) pretty much do the same thing (produce long reads). Yet the one requires concrete reinforced floors and the other can be held in your hand. Just find it astounding the difference in scale.

One of them is an optical platform doing laser based detection of nanometre scale wells, and the other ... isn't. You can't 'skip the details' here, the details are the reason

PacBio captures videos from single fluorescent molecules that are in a specific location only for milliseconds. Thus, they are trying to avoid any vibrations.
