The depth in .vcf file

Hello all,
I am checking one vcf file generated by samtools mpileup, I found for many SNP loci the DP=value is not equal to the sum of the four values of DP4=\d+,\d+,\d+,\d+. Could anyone tell me the reason for this and which value is the real one for the base coverage of the SNP?
