edgeR plotting error

Hello,

I am analyzing count data from RNAseq and, while I can properly run the differential expression analysis, the plotSmear function fails with the warning

" Error in log2(x) : Non-numeric argument to mathematical function "

but when I try to convert the file to make it numeric, I'm told the following

" Error in lapply(X = X, FUN = FUN, ...) :
(list) object cannot be coerced to type 'double' "


Any help would be appreciated.
