Bioinformatics Research Associate for NIH Cancer Genome Atlas

    Description
The Chiang lab is seeking a bioinformatics research associate to join a dynamic new research group at the University of North Carolina. As part of a collaborative team at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, we will collect gene expression data on 2000 tumors per year for the NIH Cancer Genome Atlas project. We are recruiting a highly motivated team member to examine the mechanisms of alternative splicing alterations in cancer sub-types, especially the underlying influence of cell lineage. The successful applicant will develop statistical and computational tools to detect significant changes in alternative splicing from high-throughput RNA-seq data. The candidate will generate reports to summarize these results and store them in a database. In addition, he or she will regularly communicate research findings to other scientists in the group.

    Education Requirements
Applicants must have a Master’s degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, electrical engineering, or a related field. A PhD degree is preferred.

    Qualifications and Experience
Strong programming skills in C/C++ or Java are required, as well as a solid understanding of statistical methods. The applicant must demonstrate excellent communication skills and resourcefulness in working independently. Previous experience with mySQL, Oracle, R or MATLAB are preferred. The ideal applicant has at least 2 or more years of research experience with sequence analyses, microarray data and genomic databases.

16S/ITS Profiling vs. Shotgun Metagenomics: What Changes in Your Workflow?
    by SEQadmin2

NGS has revolutionized clinical microbiology by offering new ways to identify and surveil pathogens without prior knowledge of the target. One popular approach is 16S rRNA and ITS amplicon sequencing, which targets specific microbial markers. But studies are increasingly incorporating shotgun metagenomics, a technique that sequences all DNA from a sample without targeting specific microbial markers. This approach allows more detailed taxonomic classification, detection...

Multiomic Liquid Biopsy: What DNA/RNA Panels Reveal That DNA Alone Can’t
    by SEQadmin2

Tumors contain complex mixtures of cell populations that evolve in response to treatment and host-specific factors. Tissue biopsies provide only static snapshots of a tumor’s state. But what if we could follow that evolution over time using a minimally invasive technique?

Liquid biopsies can detect tumor-derived material circulating in the bloodstream, providing a way to study treatment response, detect emerging resistance, and discover new biomarkers. Circulating
