  • Investigating the Genetics of the Human Vocal System

Researchers from deCODE genetics, a subsidiary of Amgen, have made a groundbreaking discovery regarding the genetic basis of voice pitch. Published in Science Advances, their study examined the role of sequence variants in the gene ABCC9 and its influence on the pitch of voices.

Despite speaking being a fundamental human behavior, our knowledge of the genetic factors underlying voice and speech remains limited. In this pioneering investigation, the scientists combined speech recordings from over 12,000 individuals in Iceland with genomic data to identify common variants in ABCC9 associated with higher-pitched voices.

The study revealed that these ABCC9 variants were linked to higher voice pitch in both males and females. Intriguingly, the same sequence variants were also found to be associated with elevated pulse pressure, a known cardiovascular risk factor. This highlights a fascinating connection between voice pitch and health-related traits.

Beyond voice pitch, the researchers delved into the genetic aspects of vowel acoustics. While the perception of vowel sounds is influenced by cultural and contextual factors, the study demonstrated the existence of a heritable component in these measures. This heritability is likely influenced by the shape of the vocal tract, which in turn affects the production of vowel sounds.

The findings not only provide new insights into the diversity of voice and speech but also contribute to a deeper understanding of the intricate workings of the human vocal system. This research opens up exciting possibilities for further exploration into the genetic foundations of human communication.

Essential Discoveries and Tools in Epitranscriptomics
    by seqadmin

The field of epigenetics has traditionally concentrated more on DNA and how changes like methylation and phosphorylation of histones impact gene expression and regulation. However, our increased understanding of RNA modifications and their importance in cellular processes has led to a rise in epitranscriptomics research. “Epitranscriptomics brings together the concepts of epigenetics and gene expression,” explained Adrien Leger, PhD, Principal Research Scientist...

    Current Approaches to Protein Sequencing
    by seqadmin

Proteins are often described as the workhorses of the cell, and identifying their sequences is key to understanding their role in biological processes and disease. Currently, the most common technique used to determine protein sequences is mass spectrometry. While still a valuable tool, mass spectrometry faces several limitations and requires a highly experienced scientist familiar with the equipment to operate it. Additionally, other proteomic methods, like affinity assays, are constrained...
