Notes from my co-worker (who was out at the recent SOLiD meeting): Not much of machine change this time, just a lower-profile flowcell. He also reports a 50% increase in beads per flowcell and that v.3 chemistry will run on the v.3.5 machines.

This was discussed at length at the SOLiD User's summit last week. With respect to what Rick wrote, a new bead finding algorithm will allow a roughly 50% increase in the number of beads per flowcell. The recommended bead density will increase from 130-150 thousand beads/panel to 220 thousand beads/panel. This is accompanies a flowcell swap out, new slide carriers and a newly optimized sequence master mix. I remember there being a slight decrease in chemistry cost, although my guess is that it is more than counteracted by the extra ePCR that will be necessary to generate all those beads...
Perhaps more importantly a major secondary/tertiary software release will happen in "early November" called "BioScope v 1.0". Briefly, this package will replace Global SETS, but be free for SOLiD owners (unlike Global SETS). Mapping is said to be 3-10x faster and utilize a "seeded extension mapping" method that is said to successfully map 10-30% more reads.
The really crazy stuff seems to be in version 4, which is slated for "2010".
